My practice started out of a deep desire to help heal trauma passed down through generations. As a child of two trauma survivors myself, I know that these wounds can begin in childhood and follow us well into our adult lives. My goal is to work together to notice and intervene in harmful patterns that keep us trapped in cycles of pain and heartbreak.
I have a depth of experience as a clinical school social worker for over 18 years. Prior to school social work and private practice, I worked in residential treatment, inpatient treatment and juvenile probation. The majority of my 20+ year career has been working with pre-teens, adolescents and their families. I love working with parents as they navigate raising kids!
Most recently, I have been working more with college aged busy moms and professionals.
For the past 16 years I have also supervised Masters level, clinical social work students. I also provide supervision for those working towards their LCSW.
My husband and I are busy raising our three young children. Being a parent is the greatest joy and there is no other role I rather be in.
I’m Derrick Martinez, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker passionate about helping men, teen boys, and couples build stronger connections, confidence, and clarity in their lives. I know how difficult it can feel to carry the weight of expectations, whether it’s navigating identity, balancing relationships, or facing challenges with communication and intimacy. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you can be yourself and explore what matters most.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin and my Master’s in Social Work from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, where I specialized in integrated mental health and substance use. Over the past seven years, I’ve worked in schools, universities, community mental health agencies, and federally qualified health centers, supporting adolescents, young adults, and adults from diverse backgrounds.
I specialize in helping men and teen boys develop emotional insight, self-esteem, and purpose, and I work closely with couples to strengthen intimacy, improve communication, and rebuild trust. Currently, I am advancing my training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy to deepen my work with relationships.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the COVID, or not able to concentrate and wanting to gain control of your life again? You are not alone. Life can be extremely difficult to navigate at times, especially when going through major life transitions and trauma such as the COVID. These things can greatly impact our wellbeing, especially if we do not have the proper tools to work through them.
I believe therapy works best when you feel genuinely safe, heard, and understood. My goal is to create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can openly process your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and life experiences without feeling rushed or criticized. I understand that starting therapy can feel vulnerable, so I approach each client with compassion, curiosity, and respect for their unique story and lived experience.
My style is warm, relational, and conversational while still grounded in evidence-based practices. I work collaboratively with clients to help them better understand emotional patterns, increase self-awareness, strengthen communication, and develop practical tools they can use outside of sessions. I value creating a therapeutic relationship that feels authentic and empowering, where clients can feel comfortable being honest, asking questions, and moving at a pace that feels manageable for them.
I work with individuals navigating stress, anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, self-esteem concerns, emotional overwhelm, and patterns that may leave them feeling stuck or disconnected from themselves. Together, we focus on creating meaningful and sustainable change while also making space for reflection, healing, and personal growth.
With extensive experience working with adolescents and adults across diverse settings—including hospital inpatient programs, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), county agencies, and private practice—I bring a wealth of knowledge and understanding to my therapeutic approach. My professional journey has provided me with a comprehensive perspective on mental health care and the unique challenges individuals face at different stages of life.
With a master's degree in clinical psychology and 15 years of clinical experience with children, adolescents and adult populations, I’m passionate about helping clients navigate life’s challenges with compassion, clarity, and practical tools. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can feel heard, understood, and empowered to make meaningful change at your own pace. I have experience treating mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, life transitions, stress, grief and relationship concerns.
As a therapist, I strive to create a space that feels safe, supportive, and full of hope. I believe that everyone has the ability to create change in their life — sometimes we just need the right tools and someone to walk beside us. My goal is to help you reconnect with your strengths and move forward with confidence and self-compassion
